Hypoxia is an editorial project exploring the emotional intensity of heavier rock music through a vocal-focused lens. Designed as an independent zine, it highlights artists like Linkin Park, Billy Talent, Sleeping with Sirens, and Bring Me the Horizon, analyzing how vocal tone, delivery, and lyrical content shape the emotional identity of their music. I developed the editorial structure, tone of voice, and visual identity to reflect the raw, introspective energy of the genre, balancing unpolished textures with intentional design. This project combines my passions for music and design into a multi-page print and digital experience.
The visual language of Hypoxia was built to echo the raw emotionality and tension present in the music it covers. Each article is anchored by a single dominant colour, creating a tonal identity for every band while maintaining cohesion across the issue. The layout features white text on black backgrounds to reinforce the zine’s heavy, immersive atmosphere, while black and white photography strips away distraction to focus on expression, energy, and emotion. Rough, hand-drawn illustrations are integrated throughout to reflect the unpolished, vulnerable core of the genre. Every element, graphic, tonal, and typographic, was designed to support the zine’s introspective and intense ideology. Emotional honesty in music needs an equally bold and honest visual space.
